Walter J. Reed's evidence in a legal case concerning land in Cle Elum, WA, 1898-1902.

This collection appears to be evidence from the trial of Reed vs. Johnson. It is unclear what the dispute was about; however, it appears it may have been about discrepancy about the ownership of land since Reed had been partners with Thomas Johnson of Ellensburg, WA. The collection consists of an original plat of Cle Elum, WA made in 1886 and what appears to be a copy of that plat along with a copy of a plat of 1888. The collection also contains a listing of about 120 individuals that Reed sold lots in Cle Elum, WA. This list includes the grantee's name, date of deed & filing, no. of lots, no. of blocks, style of deeds, consideration paid, and where the deed was recorded. There is a typewritten copy of a bond from John Kangley to Walter J. Reed for about $5,000. Included in the evidence is the list of Reed's expenses for the lots from 1887-1898 and the county taxes he paid. There is correspondence and receipts of his account payable.

Walter J. Reed was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on April 3, 1842. His parents immigrated to America when he was six and located in Logan, Ohio. Because his father was a thorough miner he was employed in the mines. After four years the family moved to Maryland where his father found employment as superintendent of the mines.
